NTAA seeks member feedback on Tax Ombudsman GIC review
The Tax Ombudsman is currently reviewing the ATO's decision-making on the remission of the general interest charge ('GIC') applied to unpaid tax debts.
Editor: This review is discussed in detail on page 3 of this edition of Voice.
The review will broadly examine whether ATO decisions are consistent with the law, applied fairly and transparently, and considerate of taxpayer's individual circumstances.
With the GIC now around 11% and no longer deductible for amounts incurred after 1 July 2025, tax agents and accountants are often the first to see the real impact on clients struggling with tax debts. As a result, your insights are vital to ensuring concerns are heard.
Have you or your clients experienced difficulties with GIC remission requests?
